Holisto Newsletter November 2011

Invitation to therapists
Sarah, from the Foundation of Integrative Medicine has asked us to let practitioners know about their Healthy Days workshops. Healthy Days are an opportunity for the public to learn about, and experience, a wide variety of therapies, serving to raise awareness about our physical, mental, emotional and spiritual aspects.

The Foundation is putting out an open invitation for therapists/health experts to get involved. The therapies begin at 11am, everyone breaks for lunch at 1pm, and therapies resume 2pm-5.30pm. Therapists who wish to be involved work on a voluntary basis as it is a charitable organisation. The Foundation ask therapists to commit to providing between 5-7 treatments (30mins) or 3-5 treatments (1hr each), over the course of the day.

Therapists will be provided with their own private treatment area and are encouraged to bring their own promotional materials and stands. It is a wonderful opportunity to promote your area of expertise – as individuals travel from all over the country, as well as the immediate locality. It is also a great chance to network with other therapists, try different treatments and enjoy lovely food and some of the talks/workshops.

For more details, email Sarah at integrativemendicineireland@gmail.com.

Ayurveda for the season
The Samadhi Centre specialises in Ayurveda and Hazel from the centre has written this article on maintaining health and wellbeing during autumn.

Ayurveda is the art of living in harmony with the laws of nature. It is an ancient natural wisdom of health and healing, a science of life and longevity. Nature and our lives move in natural cycles. As we are also a part of nature, we need to nurture ourselves according to these natural cycles. Our bodies tell us what they need, but in times of distraction, stress and chaos it can be difficult to listen to our bodies needs and hence disease arises.

We are well and truly in autumn now and Vata dosha is building. The properties of Vata are coolness and dryness. We need to make sure we stay well oiled and warm during this season. When Vata is dominant it is very important that we rest and renew. We need to start turning inwards and allow ourselves to quieten. For many of us, this is difficult to do. One way to achieve this is to have regular treatments that will not only help to quieten the mind, but also keep the body oiled and warm. Daily self-oil massage with Ayurvedic oils is recommended, as is a treatment such as the Shirodhara, which aids in pacifying the nervous system and quietening the mind.

It is also important to eat warm, easily digested foods. If the digestive system needs a hand and bloating, constipation and indigestion are issues, then Ayurveda offers dietary advice, teas and herbs to remedy this.

Importantly, take some time to look after your good health, so that you don’t have to spend much time looking after poor health. For further details on the Samadhi Centre, visit the website.

Holistic Practitioner Insurance for Ireland
We encourage all our listed practitioners to avail of professional indemnity and public liability insurance, for their clients' and their own protection. Some practitioners are tempted not to renew at the end of the year, but what seems like a saving could turn out to be very costly in the long term if anything goes wrong.

Whether you get insurance through your professional association, or through the Holisto scheme (€121.00 per year), remember to renew to ensure peace of mind. To avail of our discounted scheme, download the application form at www.holisto.com/insurance Or mention request the Holisto discount when renewing directly with HolisticInsurance.co.uk.

Self-hypnosis moves individuals into a deeply relaxed and powerfully focused state. In this environment, desired changes in behaviour can take place. Popular downloads are available for quitting smoking, weight loss, overcoming jealousy, procrastination and easing depression. With an extensive library, individuals can use hypnosis downloads to self-treat or therapists can use during client sessions. Insomnia, obsessive thoughts, social anxiety and insecurity are other common issues that may respond to hypnosis.

Ayurveda tips for autumn
With seasonal changes comes the challenge of keeping our doshas balanced, and as we move deeper into autumn, Vata - cold, dryness, and movement -  naturally increases.

To address these changes, Ayurveda recommends increasing moisture internally and externally. Internally through diet, with ghee and other oils, and externally by oiling the body with sesame seed oil.

Our diets should concentrate on warming, nourishing and seasonal foods. While dry, cold foods such as crisps, popcorn, sandwiches and cereal should be avoided. Other dietary changes include limiting the amount of caffeine consumed, which is drying and instead opting for teas containing ginger, cinnamon and cloves.

Wearing reds and oranges, in favour of cool colours such as blues and greens, also helps warm the body.

Finally, slowing down is important during autumn, as is routine, so aim to go to bed and get up at the same time each day.

Whether you get insurance through your professional association, or through the Holisto scheme (€121.00 per year), (See holisto.com/insurance) remember to renew to ensure peace of mind. Mention Holisto when renewing with www.holisticinsurance.co.uk to ensure you receive your discount.

Nine Things That Can Undermine Your Vitamin D Level
There’s been a lot of press lately about how low levels of vitamin D can impact on health. We may be especially mindful of the potential for us, here in Ireland, to be lacking in this vitamin, due to the obvious climate challenges we face.

Importantly, though, there are several other factors which can compromise an individual’s ability to get enough vitamin D, and these are indentified in the Swedish medical journal ‘Acta Dermato-Venerologica’. The temperature of your skin, your weight and age are less obvious factors, but impact nonetheless. Read the full article on Harvard Medical School’swebsite.

Using Natural Therapies to Quit Smoking
With cigarettes killing as many as half of all Irish smokers (according to the Health Service Executive, HSE), and the cost of smoking being around €3,000 a year, for the average smoker, it's no wonder that today, nearly 80% of all Irish smokers want to rid themselves of the habit.

The obstacle for most people is the inability to cope with the craving that kicks in once they quit. People also fear that they will over-eat, get moody and be unable to relax. While smoking is temporarily comforting and soothing, most people are hopelessly tired of the habit. They want to quit, but feel they can't!

The good news is that it is easy to quit smoking and be without the usual withdrawal symptoms - if you use the right tools. The cumulative effect of the latest advancements of faster EFT, NLP and Hypnotherapy provide the tools needed to quit smoking without suffering withdrawal symptoms. When using these tools, you don't have to worry about gaining weight either. To find out more about quitting smoking and making it easier to do so, visit the Livefree website.

For example, instead of offering 10% off a range of treatments, we suggest that practitioners instead offer a deal in terms of price. So, Reiki therapy, Ayurveda treatments, deep tissue massage etc for a fixed price. If you are currently offering a discount, please drop us a line and let us know what you think.

Holistic Practitioner Insurance for Ireland
We encourage all our listed practitioners to avail of professional indemnity and public liability insurance, for their clients' and their own protection. Whether you get insurance through your professional association, or through the Holisto scheme (€121.00 per year), remember to renew to ensure peace of mind. Mention Holisto when renewing with www.holisticinsurance.co.uk to ensure you receive your discount.

Product review – New Harvest Omega 3
I personally have been on the lookout for an alternative to cod liver oil for some time now, for ethical reasons it’s a supplement I choose not to take, despite the omega health benefits.

So, instead I take linseed as an alternative. I wasn’t aware though, until recently, that despite its many benefits for health, linseed contains short-chain omega 3 (ALA), rather than long-chain omega (EPA), which is said to be more beneficial for the body. Health wise, EPA is thought to be important for heart health and mental health, and specifically a healthy mood.

Short-chain oils, according to research I’ve carried out, aren’t converted as efficiently by the body as long-chain, and so therefore the health and nutritional value are markedly different.

I decided to trial a product - New Harvest Omega-3 EPA - which on the surface ticked a lot of boxes. Firstly, and importantly, it’s a non-fish source of EPA, so you get the same benefits from taking something like cod liver oil, but without the risk of contaminants such as mercury and lead. The product is also vegetarian and sourced sustainably.

I’ve been taking the supplement for a few weeks now and my experience has been positive overall. While it’s far too early to report significant changes, given the long-term effects for health, I think it’s something I will continue to take.
